Sammy

We are super envious of Sammy's light, bohemian-influenced style. It doesn't matter if she's wearing a long, flowy maxi dress or high-waisted denim shorts and a breezy top--she always looks put-together. It's always nice to see someone who knows how to dress and has fun with developing their personal style!

What We Wore Today: Olivia

Olivia keeps it crisp and minimalistic in an oversized white sleeveless button-down, black skinny jeans, and her favorite biker boots. She looks casual and relaxed, yet edgy and prepared for the city streets at the same time!

Zoë

Zoë looks polished with a hint of prep: her tiered skirt is fun and fresh, while her blazer and boots are professional and super-autumny!

What We Wore Today: Olivia

The dramatic cutouts, sheer patches, and geometry of Olivia's outfit emit depth and variety, which can be especially hard to pull off in a monochromatic ensemble.  In the spirit of Halloween, this super-slimming all-black look is utterly bewitching!

Maddie

Maddie's sailor-style eyelet shorts, blue top, and blue wooden heeled sandals give off a nautical vibe. Her breezy look makes us miss summer!

Claire

Claire always knows how to put together a unique, flattering outfit. Here, we love the classic scholastic-style accent of her burgundy socks and brown brogues--so fall!

Cavan (2)

Cavan is always dressed ahead of the styles. Majorly loving how her high-waisted shorts, slouchy neutral sweater, thigh-highs, and Doc Martens come together to create an effortless relaxed-chic vibe.

Meg

Meg is constantly pulling off an enviable, unique outfit. We love her grunge vs. girly look here...equal parts tough and feminine!

Jordana

The weather here in Northern California has been majorly indecisive lately, so we love how Jordana's outfit works perfectly for the transition from warmer to cooler weather we've been experiencing! While her flowy terra cotta top, knee socks, and school girl-esque Mary Janes scream "autumn", her high-waisted shorts are the perfect choice for a fall day where it still feels like summer (70-something degrees today! Weird, right?)

School Newspaper

Thank you to Collin McGarrett from our school's newspaper, The Redwood Bark, for writing such a lovely article about School of Style! xoxo

"Notable school style inspires creation of fashion blog:
Three students have started a style blog highlighting the variety of styles of different students’ outfits at school.
Juniors Claire Cella, Olivia Moskowitz, and Kenza Salem, the creators of the blog School of Style, will now be featured in the online magazine The Violet for the blog they started acknowledging students who dress well.
“We wanted to bring attention to all the people who put an effort and care about themselves and have unique styles,” Moskowitz said. “When you dress well, you do feel better about yourself.”
School of Style posts pictures between once a day and once a week. The posts highlight what different students are wearing, along with a brief summary of their outfit. School of Style also has a section that shows what the bloggers themselves are wearing.
“We try not to focus on what we like and what we don’t like, and just focus on how people are dressing day-by-day and how their style evolves and changes,” Cella said. “It’s fun to see people who have fun with the way they dress.”
Cella got the idea to make a blog about students’ styles when she started reading The Sartorialist, a similar blog about fashion in New York.
“There’s a lot out there about what designers are wearing and what adults are wearing but you don’t see a lot about kids who are dressing well,” Cella said.
Their Halloween-themed spread for The Violet, which will be published in mid-October, is about different outfits and makeup that go with the holiday, how to do the  Halloween makeup, and how to use lots of accessories.
“We didn’t want it to be scary, but we wanted it to be edgy, eerie, cool, and show how normal people can incorporate [makeup and accessories] into their lives,” Salem said.
Additionally, School of Style has a section featuring students’ styles on an international scale.
Cella and Salem contacted friends and relatives that they have who live in Sweden and France who are interested in style, and they became student contributors for the blog.
“I thought it would be kind of interesting to see how students dress in different countries,” Cella said. “We can take bits and pieces of their style and incorporate it into ours. It’s inspiring.”
Moskowitz said that their blog is featuring style, not just fashion.
“Styling is how you wear something, versus fashion, which is what you wear,” Moskowitz said. “You can take a plain t-shirt and some kid could wear it normally with icky jeans, or someone can take it and wear a really cute necklace and make it something different and unique.”
Cella said getting the pictures they’ll use for the blog is more difficult than she had originally thought it would be.
“It’s hard to find time between classes to stop people and ask to take their picture,” Cella said. “It’s really awkward and there’s often bad lighting. The blog also focuses on photography, and we want the photograph to show how someone is dressed in a good light. It can be difficult.”
Salem said that if anyone thinks a student dresses well and should be featured in the blog, School of Style would love to take his or her submissions.
“If people want to be photographed by us, approach us,” Salem said. “We want people’s ideas.” "

What We Wore Today: Kenza

It finally feels like fall here in California, and we couldn't be happier! The chilly weather and gloomy skies give us a good excuse to whip out our coziest sweater, warmest scarves, and favorite boots...Here, Kenza looks simultaneously comfortable and chic!

Gabby

Gabby's flattering high waisted flare jeans, wedges, and sleeveless button-down blouse give off a distinctly '70s vibe. Love, love love it!

What We Wore Today: Kenza

Kenza always knows how to look stylish and comfortable.  Her ruffled denim top and plush wool sweater look effortlessly sophisticated, while her brown leather hiking boots keep the look young and exciting!

What We Wore Today: Olivia

So obvi, I just dyed my hair. I wanted to keep the outfit simple and classic to offset my slightly-muppet colored hair.  Of course, a leopard belt to keep things fresh and my favorite jean shorts! Keeping it simple and stylish.

Cavan

Cavan has consistently fabulous style; she always looks so put together.  This outfit features a boyfriend-esque chambray shirt and a lovely, delicate floral peasant skirt. Loving the feminine, relaxed look.

Leisa, Again

We love how consistent Leisa's style is. Here, she continues down the earthy-nature-goddess track with another long, flowy maxi dress. Beautiful and natural!

The Swedish Exchange: Part 2

Loving the relaxed fit on her top and pants, paired with a simple ballet flat.

Great inspiration for fall/winter! Wellies paired with jeans, a pretty blouse, and cozy cable knit is comfy and can look tres chic and minimalistic.

What We Wore Today: Olivia

We love how Liv paired her striped crop top with her asymmetrical waterfall skirt, combat boots, and vintage magnifying glass necklace to get a cool urban-meets-ladylike vibe!

Floral Docs

Dear girl wearing floral Doc Martens,
We want to steal your perfect-combination-of-cute-but-edgy shoes. Thanks!

Love,

The Girls of School of Style

A Colorful Vibe

We love the colorful, blowing-in-the-wind vibe coming from this girl's excellently put-together outfit.
The vibrant pattern of her shorts play off of her dip-dyed hair (which we definitely want to copy!). Her neat lace-up boots and matching tan bag tie the look together. A+!

What We've Been Wearing Lately

Claire wears a maxi dress with a sheer skirt, interlocking bird belt, and silver sandals. Olivia wears a playful summery frock with a studded belt and black gladiators. We're enjoying the California Indian summer while it lasts!

Kenza goes for a preppy look with a forest green blazer and boat shoes.
Claire wears her mom's silk blouse with her favorite dark-wash jeans and boots for a '70s-inspired look.
Olivia adds edge to her feminine dress with her new kick-ass boots! We love the biker style, including the buckles and chunky heel! Perfect for fall...

Helene

Helene's tan sweater, white cutoffs, and ankle boots are perfect for the transition from summer to fall. Simple and effective!

The Swedish Exchange Part 1

Perfect combination of her chunky cable knit with sleek black pants, and the fringed bag--great texture and contrast!

We love the classic ladylike look on the right juxtaposed with a slightly more urban style seen to the left. Both girls look crisp and put-together without going over the top...this is a great example of how minimalism really pays off! (And how badly do you want those burgundy Doc Martens?)

All photos by Mikaela E, our foreign correspondant! Stay tuned for more Swedish street style....

Leisa

What isn't there to love about Leisa's ethereal fairy-princess look? We especially love the floaty tiers and soft rosy color of the dress, the belt that ties it all together, and ribbon woven into her braid. Magnifique!

Get to Know...

^ ...Mikaela, aka this girl right here. ^
Why?
Because she is the newest member of the School of Style team, and get this--she's from Sweden!
Look out for our new "Swedish Exchange" feature coming soon, documenting the best street style at Mikaela's school over in Scandinavia!
We know we'll be copying some of that great European style...will you?

Livi's Shoes

We love Olivia's summery espadrilles. The accent of the ankle ties is simply the icing on the goes-with-everything cake.

What We Wore Today: Claire

Photography by our stylish and talented friend Yodai.

I am obsessed with the maxi dress trend going on right now--they're comfortable, flattering to any body type, and cool on hot indian summer days! I paired mine with a woven belt, gladiator sandals, and feather earrings for a more bohemian look, but one of the best things about a solid dress with a longer hemline is its versatility, so have fun!

Taylor

Love the texture and layering of her sweaters, and the short hemline paired with boots. Very sophisticated-meets-grunge...Brilliant!

What We Wore Today: Olivia

We love how creatively Olivia uses a scarf to jazz up her outfit...the turban-style is different and fun!

Liv is almost biker-chic in an exotic head scarf, combat boots, a textured tee, and high-waisted denim shorts.

Note: We swear that there are 3 of us behind the blog! Kenza and Claire have been uber-lazy in documenting their outfits lately...

Southwestern

I apologize for crappy photography...lighting at school does not lend itself well to fashion photography!

This lovely girl was kind enough to let me take a picture of her outfit, despite the fact that I practically screamed "IloveyouroutfitcanIpleasetakeapicture?" at her....
We love the combination of her tan saddlebag combined with a denim shirt, stamped belt, ankle bracelelts, bright white cuffed jeans, and woven sandals.  Very urban-cowgirl. Add some turquoise or silver jewelry, and you've got yourself a very trendy Southwestern look!

Stuart

Stuart constantly looks sharp, and we love the bright saturated colors of his purple sweater and turquoise shoes. The best lesson to obtain from this photo is knowing what colors and styles you look good in, which Stuart clearly does!

Gabby & Kally

As well as being best friends and some of the sweetest girls at school, Gabby and Kally have excellent style! We love Gabby's flower-child style and Kally's athletic casual look.

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Yodai

Yodai always looks polished and crisp, and always has enviable footwear (we love those merlot-colored sneakers...they make him look that much more put-together)!

Shannon

We love how Shannon's lovable, funny, and totally original personality is reflected through her vibrant, fun clothes and makeup!

Gabe

We love days when the water polo boys have to dress up.  Especially when said water polo players wear a sweater, corduroys, and a bow tie....

What We Wore Today: Olivia

Meet Olivia, one of the three girls behind School of Style...looking cute and relaxed in a bohemian-esque maxi skirt, gladiator sandals, and flowy, printed top. Who said summer had to be over?

We know you want to copy her side-wraparound braid....it's OK. So do we.

Mat

Please don't mind the crappy photo quality.

It's so nice to see a guy dressing well within a sea of basketball shorts and tube-socks-with-sneakers. Mat's style is effortless and unique--he always looks put-together and chic, no matter how simple his outfit is. We especially love the sharp combination of a denim jacket and a nice dress shirt. Sloppily-dressed boys, please take note.

Tanisha

Tanisha consistently dresses well --this outfit proves that you don't need to go over-the-top to look chic, clean, and flattering. We love the texture, length and drape of her top combined with straight-leg, cuffed jeans and boat shoes!

Welcome to the School

 {kenza, claire, and olivia}

The 3 girls behind School of Style are friends and juniors at a public high school in Northern California. They started their blog in August 2011 to showcase students they see with unique personal style and to sartorially inspire other high schoolers.
